We as a human species? Not so certain. We might or might not survive our planet's balancing act. We must find our own balance, awareness and a way to co-exists with the planet in order to survive.

Tip #22: Donate, don’t trash

February 12th, 2010 Thomas (Ecotipsforlife.com Admin)

Budget: no costs and possible tax deduction
Time required: Depends on proximity of donation centers
Impact potential: Waste reduction, reusing, community improved

Tip: Next time you are going through your closet and thinking of discarding clothes that for whatever reason you don’t want anymore, consider donating them instead of simply trashing them.

Your discarded clothes could be the find of the century for another person. Many places in the US (and around the world) have donation containers and places like the Goodwill centers.

Some donations centers can even provide you with donation receipts which can get you tax deductions, that in the end even give you financial benefit.

Especially in these harder economic times, donating useful items like clothes (or furniture, electronics, appliances) could be a great help to someone in need.

Tip #20: Worming your way through composting

August 24th, 2009 Thomas (Ecotipsforlife.com Admin)

Budget: $20-$100
Time required: Completely up to you
Impact potential: Landfill reduction, great diy compost and all benefits thereof.

Tip: Today I ordered a worm composter from wormwranglers.com (this one). I am very curious to see how this will go and will post foto’s on twitter of the composter and the result.

The main reason I went for buying a complete unit instead of diy is time. Since this unit was made from recycled materials from a company that looked very much like they know what they are talking about I decided to go that route.

There are however some great websites about diy word composting projects. Checkout these resources:

Checkout any of the sites above fro great diy options and info regarding worm composting.

I’ll post regular foto’s on twitter and updates.

Tip #19: Composting on the (c)heap

June 18th, 2009 Thomas (Ecotipsforlife.com Admin)

Budget: around $30
Time required: 1-3 hours
Estimated impact: Rich fertile compost for your garden, porch or patio, can’t beat that…

Tip: For some time we have had a very small temporary compost bin made from an old 10 gallon trash can. As you can image this filled up within a very short period of time. Outside being small it also did not really provide a good environment to compost, so I found myself scouring sites looking at compost tumblers mainly because a compost pile would not work in our yard.

After seeing many types ranging from $150 to upwards opf $300 I decided to look for “diy compost tumbler” and “diy compost bin” and came across allot of posts of people making composters from cheap materials and two specific site caught my attention: http://www.instructables.com/id/Compost-Tumbler/ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn_5HRgiftg. One is a composter made from an old barrel the other how to make a rain barrel from an old cheap trash can.

So I decided to combine them and create a compost tumbler from a cheap $13 trash can, some pvc piping and a wood frame to hold the compost tumbler. I’ll post the pictures of the result on Twitter.

It works great for our needs and it only costs about $30 to make. Also I found this site later on of someone doing the same thing only without a frame. He just mixes the compost by rolling the trash can over the yard.

So if you would like to start composting, I suggest you google things like “diy compost tumbler” and “diy compost bin” or checkout any of the links above and start your own compost project. Happy composting.

Tip #18: How does your garden grow?

April 8th, 2009 Thomas (Ecotipsforlife.com Admin)

Budget: Up to you
Time required: Also, up to you
Estimated impact: Reducing food miles, potential for creating healthier eating habits, and much more

Tip: Go to your local gardening center get some vegetable plants or seeds and plant something. Either in a pot or in your yard.

Watching stuff grow that you planted is a great thing. Not only will you have the benefit of tasting your own “fruits (or vegetables) of labor”, but you’ll also reduce some of your food miles (see http://www.dailyecotips.com/tip-60-reduce-your-food-miles/)

Tip #17: Join a FreeCycle Network

February 25th, 2009 Thomas (Ecotipsforlife.com Admin)

Budget: $0 – FREE
Time required: minutes, days, weeks, whatever you decide
Estimated impact: Huge, reused items are diverted from landfills and new stuff is not being bought, hence not causing additional waste in production, packaging, etc.

The FreeCycle Network is a entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving and receiving stuff for free in their own towns.

The have groups all over the USA that you can join fro free. You can then post your stuff that you would like to give away and browse through stuff that people a giving away.

This provides a platform for anyone looking to reuse and recycle.

Take a look at: http://www.freecycle.org and find out more info about your local FreeCycle group.
